Webinar 16 – Build Your Resume: Strategies for Getting, Keeping and Advancing Employment. Presenter, Steve Harrington (Air Date: Friday, November 21, 2014)

Learning Objectives

After completing this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Identify questions potential employers are permitted to ask
  • Recall strategies for explaining gaps in the resume
  • Describe strategies for keeping a job
  • Recognize a good interview technique
  • Explain ways to advance

Potential employers are permitted to ask:

  • Do you have a psychiatric disorder?
  • Are you a racial minority?
  • What do you know about mental illness and/or substance use disorders and how do you know this information?
  • All of the above.

If you have an employment gap in your resume, a strategy for explaining such a gap is:

  • “I took time off for personal growth opportunities.”
  • “I took time off to volunteer and gain new skills.”
  • “I needed time to regain stability in my life.”
  • All of the above.

A way to enhance job security is:

  • Be a good employee by arriving a few minutes early and prepared.
  • Form meaningful relationships with co-workers.
  • Learn as many job tasks as possible.
  • All of the above.

During a job interview, it is best to:

  • Be pleasant, smile appropriately, dress responsibly, and be yourself.
  • Focus on details of your illness so they know you are really a peer.
  • Tell your recovery story in a dramatic way to exaggerate your experience, education or accomplishments.
  • Talk about how you’ve beat the system by making trouble for others.

Promotions are often awarded to people who:

  • Are happy and enjoy life.
  • Demonstrate competency.
  • Care about the work they do.
  • All of the above.
